Following the Juvenile Loon

September 11, 2022 by Gene Klco

In the last blog, I told of finding a loon on a natural nest. I went back in August to see how they were doing. As I mentioned, this was at a wilderness lake.

Wilderness Lake

It is a dammed up stream and has many dead trees and stumps in it. That only adds to the natural beauty of the lake.

As paddled around until I found the loons – only one chick survived this year.

Juvenile Loon

Here’s a close up of the juvenile. It is in it’s juvenile ploomage

As I watched the juvie decided to try to fly. It wasn’t successful while I was watching, but it was fun to see the juvie give it a try.

Time to Go

After a while, I thought I had bothered the pair long enough and said goodbye to them and kayaked out.
