Update on the Loon
Nesting
May 26,
2023 by Gene Klco
Three
weeks later, we went back for the Memorial Day weekend. Happily, the loons were
using the ANP. I went out on Friday morning and took some photos. I caught them
at shift change. So I waited till one of the loons got back on the nest.

As I
watched and took photos of them, I thought I could see some eggs on the nest.
Sure enough after loading the photos on my laptop, and blowing up the image, it
appeared that two and possibly 3 eggs were on the nest.
|
As
I waited, the loon eventually climbed up on the nest, but in a different
direction than I had seen in the past. It climbed up the ramp, not the back. I changed
the way the ramp was attached this year. In the past the ramp had a block of
wood with carpet on it to let the loons climb on. Last year the wood block blew
up and basically stood in the way of the loons using it. So this year I took
the wood off and just attached a new piece of carpet to the plastic pipe and
the netting to form a solid ramp. I guess they liked that better.

After climbing on the loon turned the eggs …

… and then settled down to keep them warm for some more
hours.
I left the loon for a peaceful day without being bothered by
me.
