The Chicks are Doing Fine!

July 3, 2023 by Gene Klco

I came back to the lake for the 4th of July holiday week and set out today to find them. I was thrilled to see them this morning. It was a beautiful Northern Michigan morning with the lake very calm. I found the on the other side of the lake.

I didn’t get a lot of time with them though. They are being very protective of the chicks. I was just trying to cruise by them – 100’ away and get a few photos.

Loon with chicks

They immediately got disturbed by my presence.

The one loon had captured a fish for the chicks,
but the other one was determined to move me away.

While the one moved the chicks away,
the other came toward me.

Loon family
Penguin dancing loon

It did a penguin dance – not a good sign. It felt threatened. It was time to move on.

As I kayaked away, it kept squawking at me. He kept it up till I turned away from them and paddled away.

Notice I said ‘he’. I observed the loon yodeling as different loon flew over the nest about a month ago. It is the only way to identify the male loon. As you can see in this photo, a few of its white feathers are missing on its side. So I knew this was the male sending me off.

Back off!

I only had a couple minutes with them and only got a few quick photos, but it was good to see that all was well with them.
