The
Chicks are Doing Fine!
July 3,
2023 by Gene Klco
I
came back to the lake for
the 4th of July holiday week and set out today to find them.
I was
thrilled to see them this morning. It was a beautiful Northern Michigan
morning
with the lake very calm. I found the on the other side of the lake.
I
didn’t get a lot of
time with them though. They are being very protective of the chicks. I
was just
trying to cruise by them – 100’ away and get a few photos.

|
They
immediately got
disturbed by my presence.
|
The
one loon had
captured a fish for the chicks,
but the other one was determined to move me
away.
While
the one moved the chicks away,
the other came toward me.

It
did a penguin dance –
not a good sign. It felt threatened. It was time to move on.
|
|
As
I kayaked away, it
kept squawking at me. He kept it up till I turned away from them and
paddled
away.
Notice
I said ‘he’. I observed the loon yodeling as different loon flew
over the nest about a month ago. It is the only way to identify the
male loon. As you
can see in this photo, a few of its white feathers are missing on its
side. So
I knew this was the male sending me off.

I
only had a couple
minutes with them and only got a few quick photos, but it was good to
see that
all was well with them.
