Update
on Loons and the 3 Chicks!
July

Back to the cottage for
the 4th
of July week, I was finally able to get a few photos of the loons when it wasn't windy.

|
Although
they are not great photos, they do show that there are still 3 chicks
after 3
weeks.
|
They
weren’t ready to allow me to get too close and I wasn’t going to push
it. I
wanted to at least get a few shots of the three chicks. Hopefully they
will all
survive and I’ll get some better ones soon.

On
July
3rd I went out and cleared the loon nest and brought it in. Note the
4th egg still on the nest. I also noted the fly paper – still one
and a half made it through the month and a half. |
Randy
helped bring the buoys in. Otherwise it
would take me 6-7 trips to bring them in via kayak. Here they are all
cleaned
up and waiting to dry and be put away for the winter.

Interestingly,
it appears the sticky fly strip proved very helpful in ridding the
black fly
problem. This shows a portion of the sticky fly strip vs. the hanging
fly
killer. While one was cleaner looking, the other did a much better job.
We will be planning for black fly deterrence next year.
