No Chicks Yet

July 3, 2022 by Gene Klco

It has been around 6 weeks since the loons have been on the nest. And they are still on the nest, trying to hatch the eggs. Not a good sign! Usually, it takes about 28-30 days. So what is going on??

Now I’m beginning to think we are going to see 2020 over again, where the eggs are infertile and no amount of setting on them will make them hatch.

Still on Nest

They are still taking turns setting on the eggs. I took a distant photo of the nest when they were off it and changing duties and could see two eggs still there. It remains to be seen how long they will keep trying to hatch the eggs. With the 4th of July tomorrow and a fireworks display right around the corner at the Park Monday night, it may end of causing them to give up on the whole process.

I got a fun shot this morning. I saw a fawn walk the shoreline behind the loon nest. The loon was not disturbed by it walking the shoreline. If it had been a person, it would have been off the nest.

ANP & Fawn

I’ll update this posting as I find out more of what becomes of this year’s
eggs.
