The
Loons are on the Nest!

While
the loons seemed to take their time, they finally laid eggs and began
setting on the nest (probably about the first of May). We were up at
the cottage from April 25-28, and saw the loons swimming around the
nest, but never get on.

|
We came up to the cottage on May 8 and saw
the loon on the nest. By the time I got my kayak out and paddled over
to them, they were in the 'changing of the guard' mode. I watched them
swim around the area for about 45 minutes - staying outside the
boundary set by the buoys.

Since
they weren't on the nest, I decided to try to get a photo of the eggs.
As you can see on this photo, two eggs are visible.
Is there a third?

Then
as I was about to give up, the loon climbed up on the ANP using the
carpeted front ramp. I hadn't seen them use that in the past. They had
always hopped up on the back. Initially, the carpet was on a floating
2x6" board. That didn't work so well as the float sometimes blew up
and sat vertically to block the passage. I switched to wrapping it
around the plastic tube in the lowered area a year ago.

Then the loon turned around and moved the
eggs to warm the other side.

I then noticed a funny thing. The loon would reach to the side and grab
a piece of the dead reeds ...
|
... and move it to the other side. A bit of personalizing the home I
guess.
