The Loons have 2 chicks!
June 25, 2024 by Gene Klco

On June 3 two loon chicks hatched!

Loon on Nest

A friend called to tell me that the loon chicks have hatched on June 3rd. We were able to go up to the lake on June 5th. It was windy that day, I was able to take a few photos from the shore. Notice the chicks swimming behind the ANP to get in calmer waters. Eventually the parent coxed the chicks onto the ANP to rest.

The next day, I went out even though it was somewhat windy. I caught the male loon yodeling at a loon flying overhead with a chick on it's back - warning it to stay away.

Finally on June 7th, the wind was calm and I was able to get a few good photos of the loons. I like the one loon looking up to the parent.

I was pleased to get this one of the first photos of one of the chicks back riding on the parent. The other chick is probably under the parent's wing (notice the bulge).

A few days later I was able to take some more photos, this time with one riding and the other swimming along.

But after awhile the parent decided it was time for me to leave them in peace. I got this photo and took my leave. We headed home later that day.

Going back a week later, it was very windy and we didn't see the loons again that trip.

With it being a few weeks after the chicks hatched and no sign of them using it anymore, it seemed appropriate for me to bring the ANP in.

After removing the cement anchors and most of the reed bedding, I towed it to our cottage to cleanup and put away for the winter.
The buoys came in as well.
