A few days ago I observed the loon parent and juvenile cruising the lake together.
It was a quiet evening and they were enjoying their time together.
|
Then
the next morning I saw the juvenile just floating off the park by
itself. Did the adults take off saying "kid you are old enough to take
care of yourself now"? I went out to get a couple photos of the
juvenile - and that's all I got before it dived and came up hundreds of
yards away. I wasn't going to play that game, so I paddled home.

It
wasn't much later that I heard the loons calling. I looked out and
there was an adult coming to the juvenile. So they didn't leave the
juvenile loon permanently, just for awhile.
|
So I went out to verify that it was what I thought. The lake was still
calm and the adult loon was not bothered by my being there (100' away).
It must have been the female.
Then after awhile, the adult came up with a small fish (it looks like a
bullhead) and it 'played' with it till it was suitable for junior to
eat.

Eventually, the juvenile got the fish and swallowed it head first.
